本建物の位置する上京区仲之町は、南北に通る御前通の両側町であり、敷地は御前通下立売を60mほど上がった東側に位置します。このあたりは、平安時代には平安京の中枢部に位置し、特に御前通の東側は、平安京大内裏「右近衛府」の跡地がありました。1227年（安貞元年）の内裏炎上の後、内裏が再建されなくなると、諸官衙（かんが）町は衰退し、西ノ京の田園風景が周囲に広がることになりました。聚楽第の建設、宝永大火後の市中心部からの人口移動などにより、地域は大きく変化してきました。本建物の敷地に隣接する曹洞宗導故寺は、1722年（享保7年）に隠元によって創建され、当地には1748年（寛廷元年）に移建されました。

Nakano-cho, Kamigyo-ku, where this building is located, is a town on both sides of Onmae st., which runs north-south, and the site is located 60 m up OnmaeShimodachuri st to the east. This area was at the heart of Heian-kyo during the Heian period (794-1185), especially on the east side of Onmae st., where the former site of the Heian-kyo Great Inner Palace, Ukon-no-fu, was located; when the inner palace was not rebuilt after the fire of 1227, the various government offices declined and the rural landscape of Nishi no Kyo became the surrounding area. The area has undergone significant changes due to the construction of the Juraku-dai and the population shift away from the city centre after the Hoei Great Fire. The Soto Zen Buddhist temple Doukoji(temple), adjacent to the site of this building, was founded by Ingen in 1722 (Kyoho 7) and was moved to this site in 1748 (Kantei 1).

門を入ると平らにならした玉石がまっすぐ敷かれ、正面に勝手口、左手に客間用の玄関があります。南側の壁面は杉皮貼りで、押え縁は竹を1本・2本と交互に使用されています。

The gateway is paved straight with flattened cobblestones, with a kitchen door in front and an entrance for the guest room on the left. The south wall is covered with cedar bark, and the push-border is made of bamboo, alternating between one and two strands.

和室4畳は、板の間のある変形した和室であり、居間との間に竹林の意匠の欄間があります。居間は、吊床のある6畳。坪庭に面した縁側との間にある障子は、腰板、ガラス、組子で構成され、組子部分は細かな模様で組まれています。

The 4-mat Japanese-style room is a variant of a Japanese-style room with a wooden floor, and has a bamboo forest design ranma between it and the living room. The living room is 6 tatami with a hanging floor. The shoji screens between the living room and the veranda facing the tsuboniwa garden are made of lattice panels, glass and braids, with the braids being constructed in a fine pattern.

離れの前室は、うるしの縁取りがある桐材の欄間があり、菊と桐の透かし彫となっています。座敷は、床柱は皮付き赤松、床板はケヤキの中杢、框は黒柿が使用されています。床脇の地板は松、落掛は鉄刀木。天袋には絵師による手書きのふすま絵が入っています。天井は杉の笹杢です。

The front room of the detached house has a paulownia wood ranma with a lacquer border and openwork carving of chrysanthemums and paulownia. In the tatami room, the floor pillars are made of barked red pine, the floorboards are made of zelkova wood in medium grain and the stile and rail are made of black persimmon. The baseboards on the floor sides are made of pine and the ochikake are made of ironwood. The tenbukuro has a hand-painted fusuma (sliding door) by an artist. The ceiling is made of Japanese cedar in sasamoku.

6畳と板間がある和室です。床と床脇の手前には、一枚板の松の地板があります。床柱はケヤキ。床脇の天袋には絵師による手書きのふすま絵があります。

This Japanese-style room has six tatami mats and a wooden floor. There is a single pine baseboard in front of the floor and floor sides. The floor pillars are zelkova. There is a hand-painted fusuma (sliding door) by an artist on the tokonoma (top pouch) at the side of the floor.
